GNU/Linux

Free This Computer

GNU/Linux is an operating system that offers superior performance and reliability as compared to other proprietary Operating Systems (OS). The Free Software Foundation (FSF) spearheaded the development of the GNU operating system. Now, some people will mistakenly call the OS developed by the FSF Linux™. For why this is inappropriate see "What's in a name" by Richard Stallman. This OS is distributed to the world by various entities, some commercial, some public, and some private. A distribution is simply a collection of the individual programmes gathered together in one location to ease the installation for the user. The OS itself comes with all the tools needed for most everyday business and personal use. If you would like to join the Free Software Foundation and help support free software, just click here: [FSF Associate Member 2938] , and it'll take you directly to the page to join.

Distributions:

Mandriva Linux: This is a commercial distribution that I find is the easiest to use for anybody new to computers and/or GNU/Linux. They offer an easy graphical installation and administration for your computer. They are also the only commercial distribution making a public commitment to the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Debian: It's not as easy, but it is worth using if you have the time to learn it. They have the reputation for be the most stable and reliable, leading to be installed on many servers.

Have GNU already installed and need some more software. Check out the Free Software Directory.
